Air pollution at home

According to a 2021 report by the NGO Ecologists in Action73% of Spaniards breathe polluted air. This means that we frequently inhale concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), PM 2.5 particles, ground-level ozone (O3) and many other pollutants that affect our bodies. The problem is that these chemicals and fine dusts do not stay in the street. It is estimated that indoor air can be between two and five times more harmful than outdoor air, although the figure may well be higher. What does this mean? That our health is at risk just by spending time in the place we hold most dear: our homes

How does it affect our health?

Air pollution not only impacts our spaces, but also the quality of our lives. In the case of those who suffer from respiratory complications such as cystic fibrosis (CF), they must take additional health measures. For example, the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) recommends avoiding long walks, which can be a serious problem for those who, despite suffering from CF, enjoy an afternoon walk to relieve stress. SEPAR also recommends staying away from hot and humid days, which will become increasingly difficult to do if the recent heatwaves sweeping Europe are any indication of the future.

This means staying indoors for long periods. According to SEPAR, one of the best strategies to achieve this is to take care of indoor air quality by doing what we can to eliminate cleaning products, air freshening chemicals and tobacco smoke. This is a good strategy, but it is complicated and incomplete, as our homes and offices are occupied by a large amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are a group of hydrocarbons that evaporate at room temperature, such as acetone and benzene, and can easily enter our bodies, causing long-term damage. They are found in printer inks, carpets, photocopiers and in the synthetic fibers of some furniture

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which wreaks havoc on our respiratory system, is a chemical that is also present at home.  It is produced by defective electric appliances and heating systems, and a simple or passive ventilation alone is unable to get rid of it. Together with PM 2.5 particles and VOCs that are found inside almost every home, puts those with CF in a vulnerable situation.

However, not only people who suffer from a respiratory disease need to take care of themselves. We are exposed to bacteria, viruses, pollen, mold, dust and other contaminants every day that affect our health and our family ‘s health.

Why you need an AIR8 air purifier at home?

The truth is that there are ways to ensure good air quality in the home or even at the office. Of course, passive ventilation is one way to achieve this, but it is a half-baked solution that is often counterproductive, introducing as many pollutants as it expels. Fortunately, we have the option of HEPA air filtration.
