Why has indoor air quality become an increasing concern?

March 31, 2023

We are becoming increasingly aware of health issues and how to prevent disease. This article will discuss why indoor air quality concerns have increased and how we can create clean, healthy air.

As people begin to recognise the importance of healthy, comforting and productive indoor spaces, awareness and demand for good indoor air quality are increasing.

Indoor air quality concerns

air quality humidity

According to the Humidity and Air Quality Observatory in Spain, since the pandemic, indoor air quality has created a concern that has increased by 69%.

This arises because of concerns about the increase in structural humidity in buildings, the increase in new building work (which has increased by 60%) and radon gas.

The Observatory pointed out that Catalonia has the most structural problems recorded. And the areas most exposed to carcinogenic radon gas are Gaul, Extremadura, Asturias, Castile and Leon.

The sick building syndrome

Have you ever heard of sick building syndrome? It is an indoor space where 20% or more of the occupants have a health problem arising from particles or toxic elements in the air.

These buildings can have different characteristics such as no ventilation system, poor air distribution, airtightness, poor quality materials, poor air filtration or poor/non-maintenance, or being located in an area with high air pollution.

In addition to this syndrome, there are several pollutants or harmful particles in enclosed spaces that we have mentioned in other blog articles—for example, viruses, bacteria, allergens, dust, pet dander, and mould. And the emission of chemicals from cleaning products, dilapidated appliances and other items at home increases the presence of toxic particles we breathe in daily.

How can indoor air quality be improved?

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to create a healthy indoor environment. Improve air quality with these tips:

  • Check the ventilation system. Do you use a ventilation system? Perform regular maintenance, clean the filters, and schedule annual check-ups to ensure the ventilation works properly.
  • Implement an efficient air purification system. HEPA air purifiers are the perfect solution for an office or home. Our air purifiers remove 99.97% of toxic particles.
  • Equip your home or office with an air quality meter. We have three models of meters 07 Guard Nano, 08 Guard Pro, 09 Guard Edge that help measure air quality and hand in hand with our air purifiers, you can create a clean and healthy environment.
  • Add plants. Plants that purify the air provide clean air. NASA research shows areca palm, sansevieria, and gerbera are good choices. These plants remove harmful substances, such as formaldehyde, from the air.
  • Ensure optimal humidity. A humidifier will improve humidity levels in the room.
